The Elders Are Watching” is a project that aims to showcase remarkable Kenyan stories through augmented reality (AR) as an artistic platform. The project focuses on the theme of how Kenyan heroes who fought for independence would view the current misuse of resources. The protagonist, Markhan Singh, a Punjabi-born Kenyan, played a crucial role in Kenya’s liberation movement and the establishment of trade unions. Despite being imprisoned for 14 years, he was a key figure in demanding complete independence from British rule. The project’s art direction utilizes a sunset color palette to symbolize the heroes’ departure and the ancestral realm, while also conveying an urgent message and a welcoming mood. The installation features a replica of Kenya’s point zero at the National Museum, signifying a connection with the entire country and implying that the elders are watching from all corners.
